Kahuzi Biega National Park is popularly known as home to rare Eastern lowland gorillas and in the world, there is a remaining total of about 4,800 Eastern lowland gorillas. Note, the Eastern lowland gorillas are the largest of the gorilla sub-species and the closest in appearance to mountain gorillas. The park hosts 4 habituated gorilla groups within their natural habitat and one of the four is very close to the park offices meaning easy to allocate with the disabled and physically weak in the body. Although the two of the group tend to move deeper areas of the forest or highlands during the dry season to look for food.

The 3 Congo lowland gorilla tours start and end in Kigali Rwanda but can also begin from Kisoro in Uganda. Traveling from Kigali, you will cross to the Democratic Republic of Congo through the Cyangugu border. Then those traveling from Uganda enter Congo through the Bunagana border. This tour package shows that you will depart through Kigali International Airport. However, the park is safe and excellent for safari visits on Congo Safaris. While on a visit to Kahuzi Biega National Park, you can combine gorilla trekking in Kahuzi and a visit to Virunga National Park to engage in the Nyiragongo hike.

Detailed Itinerary

Day1: Arrival and Transfer to Bukavu Congo

Upon arrival in Kigali, our safari driver guide will pick you up from your hotel or Airport and take you to Congo using the Cyangugu border. You will drive through the gainful and beautiful rolling hills of Rwanda as well as stunning forests along the way and primates can be seen alongside while passing through Rwanda’s Nyungwe national park. Later on, you cross into Congo using the Bunagana border and continue to drive to Bukavu town the nearest town to Kahuzi Biega National park.

Those traveling through Uganda will cross to Congo while using the Bunagana border which is close to Kisoro town.

Meal plan; Dinner

Day 2: Eastern Lowland Gorilla Safari – Kahuzi Biega National Park

Wake up early and have breakfast, you will go for registration at the park offices and briefing about the rules to consider while tracking lowland gorillas, more so what to expect and the history of the park.

Then after, the park ranger guide will allocate to your assigned gorilla-habituated families in one of the four gorilla groups. The time involved might take about 30 to 4 hours to find them. Once you find them, one hour is given to observe them, take a photo as well as capture videos.

As you trek expect to sightsee other primates, mammals, and birds among others.  After trekking, you will go meet your driver guide and drives back to the lodge for lunch and rest.

Later on in the evening, go visit the community and attractions around –the Kibati waterfalls, Bukavu town, and the Mbayo tea estate among others. You can opt to go for a nature walk in Kahuzi Biega National Park.

 Day 3: Drive back to Kigali or Kisoro –Departure

You will wake up have breakfast and after checkout of the lodge and set off to Kigali in Rwanda through the Changungu border. The drive guide will drive you through memorable routes with key landmarks and attractions along the way. If time allows you will have a stopover at the former palace of the King of Nyanza and a visit. Arrive in Kigali in the evening or late afternoon to be dropped off at your hotel in Kigali or Kigali International Airport for your flight departure.
