Lake Mburo National Park Animal : Lake Mburo national park is a game safari that boosts with larger variety of wildlife over 68 mammal species and mostly high concentration of antelope species such as impala, topi, duiker, Bohor reedbuck, Klipspringer, herds of buffaloes, zebras and Rothschild’s giraffe have been reintroduced, leopard and hyenas are also present. Hippos and crocodiles can be viewed in the lake Mburo.

Bird Life

The park is hoven for bird life with over 350 species recorded to date. They include ;Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Saddle billed stork, Brown-chested Lapwing ,African-wattled Lapwing ,Carruthers’s cisitocola ,Red faced Barbet ,African Finfoot ,rare Shoebill ,Tabora long tailed Cisticola ,African Scoop Owl ,Abyssinian Ground Hornbill and White winged Warbler, Blue breasted Kingfisher ,Hairy breasted Barbet ,Yellow rumped Tinker bird, Mosque swallow, Greater painted snipe, Southern ground hornbill ,White winged swamp warbler ,Red faced barbet ,Blue headed coucal ,African scoops owl ,Blue breasted kingfishers, among others. There are also acacia woodland bird species and forest species which can be sighted in Rubanga forest.

Lake Mburo national park is located in Kirukura district, approximately 3 to 4 hours’ drive from Kampala road making it the closest national park to Kampala capital city. The park contains an extensive area of wetland and harbors with number of mammal’s species found nowhere in Uganda including zebras and impala. There are over 350 bird species include the rare Shoebill Stork and African Finfoot. The park has several habitats and landscapes including forests, rich acacia tree valleys, Season and permanent swamps and grass lands.

The park has got several lakes but the main lake Mburo that provides great sights of many hippos wallowing in the water and large crocodiles which can be seen lurking on the shores. Water birds to be sighted include Cormorant, Pelican, fish eagle, heron few mentioned.

Best Time for Wildlife Viewing

Lake Mburo national park can be visited all year around with wildlife viewing highlights. The best time to enjoy all the activities in here is in the dry seasons from June to September and December to February, during this period of the year number of animals can be seen gathering around rivers and waterholes. Then wet season happens March to May and September to November during this seasons larger number of species can be seen in the open valleys.
