Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary : Ngamba Island is a project of the chimpanzees Sanctuary and wildlife Conservation Trust ‘’CSWCT’’, that started in 1997 and it provides a home for more than 40 orphaned chimpanzees to live out their lives, since a return to their natural habitat is not possible, whereas educating visitors and local communities about their remarkable species and the importance of conserving their fragile forest habitat.
Ngamba Island is approximately 100 acres ,98 of which are forested and set apart from the visitor’s area by an electric fence where the chimpanzees roam through the day.
Note; Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary offers chimpanzee encounters as a half or full day excursion.
You will view either a morning or afternoon feeding, of the chimpanzees from the visitor’s platform area on the edge of the sanctuary fence, hear an informative talk by sanctuary staff, enjoy lunch with a great chance of viewing a neighboring fishing village, bird watching among other wildlife encounter.
Meeting point; In Entebbe, Banga Beach where safe parking with a covered waiting is available before departure from the jetty. Journey times are weather dependent for lake conditions, estimating 60 minutes by speedboat or 90 – 120 minutes each way by traditional motorized boat.
Half Day Speedboat Trips – From USD 110 Per Person;
Timings- Morning viewing 9:00am – 1pm.
Afternoon viewing 12:45pm – 5:00pm journey time estimating 50 -60 minutes each way – weather dependent. Price includes return boat transfers and Island entrance fees –subject to minimum numbers on board and residence category.
Full Day Traditional Motorized Canoes Trips – From USD91 per person
Timings – Morning viewing 08:00am -3:00pm.
Afternoon viewing 10:30am – 5:00pm journey time approximately 90:120 minutes each way – weather dependent.
Visitors are provided with all the essentials required while on boat such as life jackets and rain suites. Note, all the above rates are guideline and are subject to change and are only verified when reservation are confirmed.
Children under 5years – free of charge; But between the age of 5-15 years pay half price. Prices include return boat transfer and island entrance fees –subject to minimum numbers on board and residence category.

Caregiver for a day Experience – USD 200 per person per day
This is a splendid program where visitors get the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a chimpanzee Caregiver through being Caregivers themselves! You being one of the chimp caregiver, you will be excited about the experience such as; viewing the chimps feeding, but to participate in preparing their food and feeding them.
Well, you can assist the staff with any activities happening at the sanctuary that day –medical checkups, research and monitoring, preparing the holding areas for the chimps and administrative work or any other activities that your skills and experience can be used for.
More so, this program is aimed at helping our visitors understand and appreciate what it takes to look after our orphaned cousins on Ngamba Island and raising funds for their well-being. The staff will work you to show you just what involved in taking care of these primate species, how individual they are and what makes them so special.
As a caregiver, you get to meet and interact with all the chimps on the island but ‘’direct contact ‘’ is not allowed but possible under close supervision of a resident Caregiver. Excursion is subject to many pre-approvals from CSWCT.
