Primate species found in Uganda; Uganda is blessed with more than 20 primate species in Uganda, comprised of 13-day walking ‘’diurnal’’ and seven nocturnal species. This makes Uganda a nation with the highest concentration of primates on the continent. The list of Uganda primates includes the mountain gorillas and chimpanzee with the most tourist attraction and the latest discovery of the dwarf galago species.

The most spotted primates on the list are the old word Monkey species: the golden monkey, de Brazza’s, black and white colobus, red colobus, potto, grey-checked mangabey, bushbaby, L’hoests monkey, red- tailed monkey, vervet, patas, baboon and blue monkey among others.

Mountain Gorilla

Mountain gorillas are the ground dwelling mammals which comes from the family of great apes including; chimpanzee, orangutan, bonobo, gorilla and human. In Uganda-mountain gorillas live in two separate populations in Uganda’s mountain forest and the neighboring Rwanda and DRC. The fact about gorillas can be differentiated from each other by their nose print, like a human’s thumb print. Gorilla live in groups- families which is headed by adult male silverback , eight people in groups are the one allowed to trek in a group of gorillas. In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has got four gorilla sectors where gorilla trekking takes place such as; Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo and Ruhija. The park is located in southwestern region of Uganda, approximately 8 to 9 hours drive to access the main destination.

Chimpanzee

These are the sought after mountain gorillas, the chimpanzees are the human’s closest cousin which bare 98% DNA to humans. In Uganda these great apes can be tracked in their natural forest and best seen in Kibale forest, Budongo, Kalinzu forest, Kyambura Gorge and Semuliki forests.

Primates Species Found in Uganda : Golden Monkey

The golden monkey is one of the unique primate’s species that exclusively inhabits the bamboo forested slopes of the Virunga’s and nowhere else in the world. The golden monkey consists of a bright, vibrant, golden orange coat and beautiful little face. In Uganda can be watched in the southwestern corner of Mgahinga National Park in its    bamboo jungle.

Primates Species Found in Uganda : Blue monkey

The blue monkey has close to the golden monkey. Despite its close relation they are more widespread in every other forest in the country and in all parks except in Murchison Falls and Lake Mburo National Park.

Primates Species Found in Uganda : De Brazza’s monkey

De Brazza’s monkey is one of the most impressive primate species with its cute white mustache, reddish – brown brow and distinct blue scrotum. They are inhabitant of Semuliki National Park near Fort portal city in the west and Mount Elgon National Park in the eastern Uganda region.

Black and white colobus monkey

This is a stunning primate species but does not have thumbs; The black and white colobus monkey’s contrasting due colors are not clear.

Facts about the black and white colobus monkeys;

They have a black coat beautifully contrasting with the long white mantle on its back, bushy tail, whiskers and beard around the face.

Red colobus

These species have cute big eyes and tufted crown with its brick-red grey and white -colored coat make this primate an extra-ordinary species to adventure. However, they are closely related to the black and white colobus and are commonly seen around Kibale Forest. They can be also seen in Semuliki National Park.

Potto

These potto species have closest look to bear and some time is called the bush bear, tree bear. This primate species is known as a nocturnal tree dweller found in Kibale Forest and you can meet its googly eyes on a night -guided nature walk.

Bush baby

The bush baby literally sounds like a baby and can easily spotted in Kibale Forest.

Grey-checked mangabey

The grey-cheeked mangabey is slightly golden mane around the neck and a shaggy appearance that make it one of the most extra-ordinary primates in Uganda to watch.

Lhotse’s monkey

They are beautiful species that contrasts with the dark brown and chestnut-colored coat. Although, they are less well-known and more difficult to see than other primates’ species in Uganda. If you’re lucky, you will watch them in Kibale Forest, Bwindi Impenetrable or Maramagambo Forest.

Red-tailed monkey

This is a commonly primate species with remarkable looks with their white cheeks, whiskers and a distinctive white, heart-shaped patch on their nose. They are small in size and most spotted in Kibale, Bwindi, Queen, Semuliki among others.

Vervet monkey

This is a unique primate species   and can be watched in the botanical garden in Entebbe.

Patas monkey; They are best spotted on the savannah plains of Kidepo and Murchison Falls National Park.

Baboon

This is a brilliant monkey and wide spread primate species in Uganda. Well, an adult male baboon has canine teeth longer than those of a leopard. Although, they are not liked by tourists.
