Buhoma sector is a home of four habituated gorilla families namely Mubare, Rushegura, Katwe and Habinyanja which are available for trekking on a daily basis. Buhoma sector is one of the four sectors and also the most famous gorilla trekking sector in that it harbors the oldest mountain gorilla family Mubare. Buhoma sector is a home of over 360 recorded bird species including forest birds, migratory birds and Albertine endemic bird species. During the Batwa cultural experience, you will be able to learn about their hunting and gathering skills, hike through the forest where they used to live, learn how the medicine men used to heal different sicknesses with herbs, visit their traditional homestead, listen to their ancient songs, music and drama among others.

Best time to go for gorilla trekking in Buhoma sector

Gorilla trekking in Buhoma sector can be done anytime throughout the year though the best time is during the dry season in the months of June to September and December to February. During the dry season there is less or little rainfall in Buhoma sector therefore vegetation will be thin which allows you to view the mountain gorillas clearly, access roads and gorilla trekking trails will be dry and passable which makes trekking easy.

How to get to Buhoma sector

Buhoma sector is located in the northern part of Bwindi impenetrable national park and can be accessed by road transport means whereby you will drive from Kampala via Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale and then Buhoma sector which takes about 8 to 9 hours’ drive.

You can also access Buhoma sector from Queen Elizabeth national park via Ishasha sector and Kigali Rwanda whereby you will fly to Kigali international airport and then connect to Buhoma sector via Cyanika or Katuna border which takes about 3 to 4 hours’ drive.

Buhoma sector can as well be accessed by air transport means whereby you will book scheduled or charter flights with bar aviation or Aero link Uganda from Entebbe international airport to Kihihi airstrip and then connect to Buhoma sector by road.
