Things to Do in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park : Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is famously known as home to half world’s population of endangered mountain gorillas, located in southwestern region of Uganda estimating about 8 to 9 hours’ drive. The main tourist attractions in the park is Gorilla trekking and other activities includes birding, Batwa cultural visit, Nature walk among others.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Forest;
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is an astonishing lifetime experience which starts early in the morning with briefing about Gorilla rules and regulations. The experience can take about 30 to 7 hours depending on where they where’re last seen the previous day. The park ranger will lead you through the forest trail head in search for gorillas. As your trekking you will be able to see to other primate species and forest animals such as forest elephants, white and black monkeys, chimpanzees among others. Once gorillas are found, one hour will be given to you to spend with them and learn about their behaviors, feeding, playing habits and capturing videos.
Birdwatching
Bwindi forest is a home for birders, boosting with over 350 species of birds and some of birds to see along your visit to Bwindi includes; Regal sunbird, Handsome spur fowl, Green-headed oriole, Doherty’s bush shrike, Black bee – eater, Shelley’s crimson, Chapin’s Fly catcher, Grauer’s Broadbill, Grauer’s Warbler, African Green Broadbill, Short-tailed Warbler among others.
Nature ad waterfalls walks
This is a rewarding activity which can be done through different forest trails leading you to beautiful waterfalls, Buhoma –Nkuringo trail, Rushara hill walk trail that link between Congo and Uganda, Muyanga waterfall walk, Ivi River Walk-14kilometers and takes about 7 7hours, Muzubijiro Loop -6 kilometer walk around the hill where you have chances of interacting with primates and birds.
Mountain Hiking and biking
The park is located in Kigezi region a mountainous area with beautiful scenery. Most lodges in Bwindi have bikes to hire per day to take on the special trails created in the community. You will be accompanied by the guide through Ivi river trail from Buhoma park headquarter to Ivi river organized by ride for a woman.
Community walk and cultural experiences
Taking a safari to Bwindi – you can choose to take on the Batwaji experience and get to interact with people who use to live in the forest for many years with gorillas. Take different walks in Buniga forest nature walk in Nkuringo, Nyundo community Eco trails and king Bakyara’s waterfall trail. Visit the Buhoma Community area of interest – visit the handcraft shops, primary school and getting to learn how to make banana juice and have taste.
How to get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?
By road;
From Kampala –kabale –Kanungu –Buhoma which follows a tarmac highway till Kabale for about 414kilometers in about 6-8hours. You’re highly recommended to have a 4WDvehicle. Or you can choose to start your journey from Rwanda –Kigali via Chanika border which takes about 4 to 5 hours’ drive to access Bwindi.
There is also a route that goes through Queen Elizabeth National Park via Kihihi and to Buhoma passing through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park a great location to adventure the tree climbing lions.
By Air
Bwindi National Park can be reached either by air from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Kihihi Airstrip for client who have Buhoma gorilla permits and Ruhija gorilla permits. Then, Kisoro airstrip for clients trekking in Rushaga, Nkuringo and those to trek in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Domestic flights by Aero link Uganda from Entebbe International Airport, which operates both scheduled and charter flights to the respect air strips. The landing takes about 1:15hours.
Best time to visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi National Park can be visited all year round though the best time to visit the park is during dry seasons, from December to February and June and August.
